Shantaram

I recently picked Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Its my habit to pick 1-2 best-sellers every month and read them.

Shantaram is a first-time write and is a huge one, more than 900 pages. I am still going through it but thought mention a snippet of which i would like to share with you all.

This is where Lin (The character who narrates his expriences) talks with Karla about her friend(Ulla). This is Karla describing her

"..She would have done anything for him. Some women are like that. Some loves are like that. Most loves are like that, for what I see. Your heart likes to feel like an over-crowded lifeboat. You throw your pride out to keep it afloat, and your self-respect and your independence. After a while you start throwing people out - yoru friends, everyone you used to know. And it's still not enough. The lifeboat is still sinking and you know its going to take you down with it. I've seen that happen to a lot of girls here. I think that's why i am sick of love.

I could not tell if she was talking about herself, or pointing the words at me. Either way, they were sharp and i didnt want to hear them "

The book is about (as i read on the cover says) selt-titled character's life in India especially in Bombay

. The city i love so much.
Will keep you updating.
:-)

Disasters

While New Orleans and the world is still recovering for the disaster of Hurricane Katrina, another tragedy has struck us.
This time it is in Iraq.

Atleast 816 people have been killed in Baghdad in a stampede. The stampede was triggered by rumours of suicide bomber at a Shiite pilgrim site.

Bloomberg

"At least 953 people were killed when Shiite Muslim pilgrims stampeded on a bridge spanning the Tigris River in northern Baghdad after insurgents attacked a nearby mosque, the Iraqi government said late today."

CNN

"Most of those killed were women and children, police sources said. Authorities expect the death toll to reach 1,000, Health Ministry official Jased Latif Ali said."

Herald Tribune

"
Most of the dead were crushed or suffocated, witnesses said, but many drowned after falling or jumping into the Tigris River after the panicking crowd was crushed against the bridge railings. The disaster was by far the greatest one-day loss of life since the American invasion in March 2003."

Search warrant for an ENTIRE CITY!

From digg.com

Well Anti-piracy guys have done the unthinkable. Forget about getting warrant agains a person or a gang of pirates, MPA(Motion Picture Association) has gotten a search warrant for the entire city of New Delhi, India.

Quote

In a statement, the MPA explained that the order “permits police to search any premises suspected of containing pirated products, and permits officers to open locked premises without delay. The order is expected to be especially useful in facilitating raids on the notorious Palika Bazaar, where information about imminent raids often leaks before police can effect arrest and seizures.”
